CMKY Channels print in grey?
« on: February 21, 2011, 09:35:35 AM »
Hello.

Using CS5 here and trying to print CMYK to transparancies.  My design is in CMYK and when I goto print the channels,
they preview and print in grayscale instead of black and white.  I am pretty sure that this is wrong as the screens will
not burn correctly with a grayscale image.  Is there anyway to print these in black and white other than going into the channels
and messing with the brightness/contrast.   Probably am missing something here!

Thanks.

Maybe I'm missing something here but to print a design in CYMK, you will get four plates of various grays representing the different proportions of each of the colors required to mix and get the finished product. These will be black dots in the chosen shape and frequency.

Is is possible that you instead are looking for spot color plates?

RIP will translate that in a bitmap file and halftones. If you do not have RIP, print the seps as a PDF file, open each page in PS at 300dpi and convert to Bitmap file. Then you will have everything as a black and white halftones.
Hope it helps.

The problem is, if you burn your screen with a gray transparency you will have an issue.  Either the pixel should accept
the color or not.  That is why its better to use black ink when burning the images.

Guess what I am wondering is can I burn these images(gray scales) to screens and get satisfactory results?

Perhaps I will go with spot color as usual, but would prefer to use CMYK because you can get a multitude of colour
using only 4 different inks.

You do have a postscript printer or a RIP, don't you?

I was just about to type that, though I shouldn't, I took that for granted. I was also going to ask if he did set his parameters for halftone configuration, or if the "Gray" is just printer default dot size(frequency) black halftone.

Provided you have the right printer and or RIP you should be getting something like this.

I can not say for sure...but I have been told that CS5 has taken many of the settings that we use out of the software.

Maybe someone with CS5 will come in on this.

Sorry guys.

Just have a regular inkjet printer, CS5, and transparancies here.
Have no rip software either.  Can print spot, but trying to master CMKY.

You will have to change the art from the cmyk to spot. If your want to print in spot.

I have so many people that send me art in multi layers, bleeds, part rgb and part cmyk and so on that its just nuts.

WHO ever makes the art NEEDS to know what they are doing for a screenprinter not a fancy inkjet printer.

We just don't hit the print button.

If easy art and you have already printed the pos's .

The old school is just to take a black or red sharpie to it and color it in.

DKgraphics gave you the best way to print cymk without a rip...it can be done, but I would really get myself a rip to do the job right and to have more control over it.

Thanks! Yes I will use DK's method for the time being and look into the RIP software.  I wish these features were all built into CS5.  For $450 it should do everything and more.

And that is why you cannot get it to separate out right.

You need to install ghoscript and ghostview. This will allow you print the art out as a postscript file and then open with ghostview to print the halftones to your printer.

P

Who was that that said the print dialog box options were so much different or gone in CS5?

It was on here and something like 1 1/2 or less years ago. I can't remember.

Maybe someone will post a pict of the CS5 print box.

Lets see if this works. I print from Illustrator so I never use the settings in PS. I use Accurip and tell it everything I need from there. Heres a screen shot of CS5. Is that what you guys are looking for?

I can't see that.

But my question is can you still set dpi, angle and dot?

I like your site. Nice colors.
