I have a small icon which is on a tranparent back ground, how can i save just the image only with out the background as a jpeg or gif?

GIF and PNG file format both support transparent backgrounds.  Select "Save for Web" and then select either GIF or PNG and check the transparent background tick box. If you image was on a transparent background or a white background it should save just the image only without any visible bounding box around it.
