Any way to opt out of certain boards by choice here?

does the forum software offer a way for users to "opt out" of seeing certain sections along with sometimes numerous references to them in "Show Unread Posts".

Yes, in your profile there is an "ignore boards" feature that will allow you to not see boards that you list there. I don't know if or how well it works as I see everything even if I click an ignore.

Cool, I don't visit my Profile section enough to even remember  if I had ever even seen that feature.
Perhaps others are in a similar situation and wish to separate the wheat from the chafe as it may be.

Finally a benefit to me being defrocked!

Sort of like cleaning up my desktop, something I need to do more often.
