DTG experiences & recommendations
« on: April 12, 2011, 09:25:28 AM »
We are considering a DTG machine to augment our screen printing and embroidery business. I would be very interested in any information I can gather from those who have such machines. I remember quite well the issues with the T-jets awhile back, and don't want to be in that position.

whites and lights - you can't go wrong with the Brother GT-541.  i've got over 50,000 prints and not one issue.

darks.... i don't have any personal experience with any of them but I know Sam from Palomar has had good service from his M & R Idot.
Have a great day! :)

I second the Brother printer, 70,000 prints and I've replaced the black print head.  That machine just makes money, pure and simple.

Nope, and frankly, I still don't think white ink has been perfected in any of the sub-$30,000 machines.  What you should do is sub out the dark shirts and do the light shirts in house.  That is what we do and I maybe sub out 1 job every 3 or 4 months.

You have screen printing, you can still print dark shirts there.

Saw an ad for a used Kornit for a reduced price of $110,000. But I'd be dead before its paid for itself.

No kidding, part of that could be because you are too old to begin with.  :i>

That is a ton of money though.  For the hourly rates on that machine, it would be tough, and I had a friend that owned one, and he returned it.  The thing never ran right.  He has a GT-541 now.

Whit,

if you really want to do darks and not drop 110,000 (LOL) contact Sam at Palomar Printing about his Idot.  i'm sure he'd be glad to chat with you about it.  like i said, i know he's had good luck with it.
Have a great day! :)

Thank you all for your input, this has been very helpful. I agree about the big dollar versions, that's a lot of shirts a few at a time.

I like the Brother, I've seen awesome prints from it, but frankly the ink costs are still a little on the high side.  I could use the extra production of having a dual platen system, but the white ink is the killer on the deal, I just don't think we could justify it right now.  Maybe when I am on the other side of some other payments, but not right now.
