help with hats
« on: April 25, 2011, 05:04:07 PM »
I have a melco emc 10/4t machine, and am new to embroidery. I'm having a problem with stitching
caps.  I can stitch a flat design without a problem, but when I try to stitch caps the design is distorted.
all heads do the same thing.  I did everything that I know how to fix this but to no avail.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Can you show a pict of a done cap and one of your cap frame.

Design needs to be digitized inside-out, for a hat stitching. I use two pieces of hat backing, especially if it is a unstructured hat. Pictures would help like Killer said.

Digitizing for anything (even flats) requires reshaping the design to compensate for weft/weave.  To sew a perfect circle, what is digitized will look more eliptical or egg shaped.  When digitizing for hats, not only does the surface that is being sewn curve from left to right, it curves from bottom to top.

Sounds like the problem I encountered the first time I tried hats years
ago. Even if digitized correctly, without the proper backing you can give
it up. Everyone's suggestions are on the money but you may have to
experiment with the backings. Each style of hat may require a different
method and the hoop you use will also come into play. You may also
try slowing your machine down. I never run hats above 500 SPM.

Some suggestions that may help

slow down the machine to 500 rpm
hoop and re hoop your hats until you get consistant results, it is all about technique
use two sheets of backing
make sure you have the caps needle plate installed, it is usually different than a flats  needle plate
tighten up tensions on the bobbin slightly
after you hoop the hat, try rehooping it while on the machine. You may find you can pull it down tighter when on the machine
use binder clips to secure the hat
make sure you needle is turned about 5 degrees to the right as you look at it in the machine
soften up the hat (if it is constructed type )with your hands before hooping
check your hooping
check your hooping again

practice practice practice...............

hope this helps some

Thanks for all the info.  I have been running the hats at 500 stitches. I found part of the problem
with the hat attatchment, it was slightly out of the groove. Hats are stitching much better but not
there yet.  I will try the rest of the suggestions and post pic if still having the problem. Thanks everyone!
