The way I remember it, Monogram had lots of specific show cars, while AMT mostly had everyday cars with the parts included to "trick 'em out" either custom or race.
And I dug the fact that one could swap parts between kits, and with a little xacto, file, and sandpaper magic, anything was possible.
I also remember running a black, '63 Corvette, (split rail removed, Doh!) as a slot car body, heavy as it was.
Then, up at the Seattle World's Fair, AMT had a hall, and they even had a new 1/24 scale slot set.
