Epson 1400 or R1900?
« on: March 05, 2010, 02:39:07 PM »
I've decided to get another inkjet printer. The epson 1400 and R1900 print similar size, but are distinctly different printers.

I'm interested in opinions why one printer is better or worse than the other.

Hey Fred, I can't speak for the 1900 (I think Preston uses one?) but we have 2 1400's and they are good. 13 x 19 max on the film size though. We're using AccuRIP, which as you've probably know, pulls from all six cartidges, which we refill ourselves. Nice and black, sharp and crisp. Not to be compared with an actual imagesetter, but damn good for t-shirt work.

I have the 1400 and Accurip. I got refillable cartridges and ink from http://www.inksupply.com/. I don't even remove the cartridges. Every now and then I pop the plugs and refill the cartridges in place. Quick and easy. The cartridges reset when the printer says it ran out, which doesn't necessarily match with the amount of ink in the cartridge.  I also have another 1400 with the same cartridges with refillable color ink. I refill the same way.

ARC-1400-EC-SET is the complete empty set. I get the ink from them too.

this is the same company as inksupply.com.

I cannot compare the two as I have never had a 1400. I have the 1900 and I like it. The 1900 will do 13" by what ever because it can use roll film. The 1900 does not have a automatic roll sheet cutter like the 2200 did but you can advance the roll, cut with scissors and then it will back the roll in to the starting point. I used to use roll film in it but I am getting such a deal on 13x19 wp-sheet film from Reece Supply that I just quit using the roll film. One reason is 13" roll film is hard to find even though I have a source and you cannot fit the entire 100 foot roll in the printer at one time so you have to make 2 50 foot rolls out of the 100 foot roll.

I also use refillable cartridges that I got off eBay for 25 bucks for the set of 8. They have auto-reset chips and I just re-fill them with ink I get from inksupply.com (MIS). I have dye based black in all of the cartridges.

The 1900 is faster than the 1400 and has a roll option.
The roll option on the 1900 is fiddly (when I have used it) and most users stick to the sheets on the 1900, so would come down to speed.

Quality of output is the same.

Best regards
