New guy from Alabama
« on: September 07, 2011, 04:56:39 PM »
Hey guys, this is my first post. So I'll just say hello, and tell you a little about myself. I am a professional firefighter with the city of Huntsville, Alabama. The short version of a long story is, I started out airbrushing a few years ago and wound up with old beat up screen printing equipment, vinyl cutting equipment and a bucket truck. I sold everything due to a family emergency. I bought all new (used) stuff the first of this year (2011) and am ready to go at it. So, I have some experience (a couple of years), but really feel like I have had nothing more than an introduction to screen printing. I currently have an Antec Legend 6/6 manual press, a M&R Economax II dryer, vastex flash, a Nuarc 3140 exposure unit and a homemade screen drying cabinet. I use corel draw, Smart Designer, Accurip, oh yeah and an old version of photoshop (9). The bulk of what I do is 1, 2, and 3 color jobs. Business is starting to pick up some and I am 51 years old so, I am pretty sure that a used automatic is somewhere in my future. I am printing a 3000 shirt order now. That seems like a lot to me, for a middle aged fat guy, with a manual press. Anyway if you guys are still reading this after all my rambling, I am glad to be with y'all. I have a bucket load of questions but I will try to space them out so as not to be too much of a pest. And if I stumble across something (learn from mistake) that I think might help, I'll be glad to share.
Thanks,
Steve

Welcome Steve. You have a nice press and other things there so you should really be able to step your game up as you learn new tricks and techniques.

As far as asking question, well just ask away. No need to worry about asking to many.

Welcome Steve.

Don't be afraid to ask questions that's what we're for. The only dumb question is the unasked question.

We have a couple of other fire fighters here as well

Welcome

The "stumble across something (learn from mistake)" is the best way, I keep thinking I will one day run out of mistakes...

but it hasn't happened yet. ;D

Welcome to new guy Steve,

Mistakes are a great learning tool. But if you ask your questions and it keeps you from making one or two mistakes, you will be a head in the print game.

And always remember, everyone who prints started at some point in their life. And even after many years some of us are still learning from mistakes and others experience.

There are people here more than willing to share their hard earned knowledge.

Again welcome.
Ralph (first sold print job was in May 1984, on a bet)

Things have been slow around here in the questions department for a few months.

Toss a couple of your questions out to get things going again.

If not, we may just may have to talk about summer vacation trips. (NOT)

Very good choices for the equipment, it will make a difference. Feel free to ask, as if you didn't know that by now. For the 3K order, if you have a helper load and unload shirts for you, it will speed it up a bit. We did a fair number of very large orders before we bought our first used auto.
