looks like emulsion has runs, after drying
« on: December 20, 2011, 10:22:28 AM »
I noticed after applying my emulsion after it drys there seems to be runs, someone mentioned that maybe too thick on the emulsion , but i scape off any excess after applying, also its been mentioned the way i dry, or rinse, but ive been rinsing and drying the same way on my other screens, it seemed to start all of a sudden when i used a new coater, after checking i noticed there were tiny nicks about avery 1/2" all across the coater ( 15") could this be why, by the way my image came out ok.

It's hard to tell by just the pict.

But scarping off emulsion...Bad

Nicks in new coater...Bad

But to me that looks like something ran down on the screen as it was drying, soap, not all the way clean or residue left on the frame that then ran down the screen as it dryed.

What Mesh is that it looks like a big hole. If so try to coat 1/1 or 1/2 and "after it drys do another 1/1" and dry again.

If you have nicks in your scoop coater it will defiantly leave marks or lines in your emulsion. If it's new I'd take it back to where you bought it and get a new one.

Are you drying your screen flat with the print side down?  If you run your finger across the emulsion does it feel nice and flat or can you feel ridges in it?

If your sceens are coming out OK and the print are good then it may just be the emulsion needs to be mix a little better. The pigment in the emulsion may
not be fully mixed in and it looks streaky

I looked at your photo.
I see discolorations but not runs. I also see mesh that looks like it is not coated completely. I can see dips in the emulsion in the weave.

So I think the streaks could be the light shining through the unevenly coated mesh as well and the emulsion needed to be stirred more.

Also with the mesh not covered completely I can see your squeegee edges being worn down quickly during printing effecting the prints.

Can you feel nicks on the edges of the coater or is it smooth to the touch?

Without actually having the screen in hand my thought is the coating is too thin and not completely covering the mesh. The coating should be smooth on both side of the screen. The top so the squeegee runs on a flat smooth surface. The bottom so the screen makes a good sealing gasket on the garment to reduce ink from gain during the printing process.

I coat one and one for normal printing.

You should dry your screens laying flat. The best way is in some kind of a drying rack. You don't need anything fancy.
You can build you own if your handy with tools. Here's a commercially built one to give you an ideas. And get a new
scoop coater if your other one has nicks in it.

Stitch is 100% right about how to store screens and I did also for over 20 years.

Now I don't have the room to do so, so I make a drying tree with a 20" box fan running a blue air filter "Poor man's air filtration system" in the dark room.

You can get 20 to 25 screens in a tree.

So it can be done "you newbies" but move to the racks as soon as you can.

I'm coating about 75 to 100 screens at a time.

Actual picture on my darkroom. Auto screens behind me on the other end of the room.
